In 1672 (we owe this anecdote to Aubrey’s Brief Lives), two great authors, both called John, had one of the strangest meetings that literature can reveal. The older scribe: Milton, sixty-four years old, blind, a grudgingly tolerated Cromwellian relic, able famously to inspire sweat-inducing fear and, much less famously, to command considerable charm. The younger scribe: Dryden, forty-one, far better known at this stage as playwright than as poet or essayist, of personal morals higher than most of his Restoration cronies, yet marred by cliquishness and the social-climbing urge. Although Dryden had spoken of Milton with forthright reverence—“This man cuts us all out and the ancients too”—he had a more specific errand than the mere desire to sit at his senior’s feet. Specifically, he wanted leave to turn Paradise Lost into rhyming couplets.
Milton could have been forgiven for ordering away so impertinent a petitioner. Instead, he treated Dryden’s request with sardonic amusement: “Aye, you may tagmy verses, if you will.” Perhaps he predicted that the result would leave the Thames resolutely damp, as, indeed, it did.
