Friends and Young Friends Event: Private tour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Writing in the September 2013 issue of The New Criterion, the collector, gallerist, and conservator-restorer Marco Grassi said of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's revamped European painting galleries: "These changes have once again...reaffirmed the centrality of European painting in our Western culture. The new galleries, preceded as they are by that impossibly broad staircase, now truly preside as the core of Hunt's grand monument." On the morning of February 21, Marco will lead an exclusive private tour of the galleries for Friends and Young Friends of The New Criterion.

Space for this special event is extremely limited. For further details and to reserve your place, please contact Eric Simpson, simpson[at]newcriterion.com, (212) 247-6980.

FRIENDS AND YOUNG FRIENDS EVENT: A conference on "The Kennedy Phenomenon"

This November will mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The editors of The New Criterion invite the Friends and Young Friends to a conference on November 19 from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM to discuss "The Kennedy Phenomenon." In many ways, Kennedy's assassination was a turning point in American history, igniting a cultural revolution and leading to the collapse of mid-century liberalism. Our conference aims to look at the event as a case study in public myth-making and the ways in which images and symbols can override fact and substance in political life.

Conference participants will include Peter Collier, Roger Kimball, James Piereson, Fred Siegel, and Ira Stoll.
