Friends and Young Friends Event: A conference on "Preserving an Open Society in a Perilous World"
A free, open society is a prerequisite for economic prosperity, and for the advance of knowledge with all the betterment that that implies. Yet preserving freedom and openness requires security. The nature of threats, and certainly the perception of their nature and imminence, necessitate defensive measures — including “pro-active” or preemptive defensive measures — that often constrain our liberties.
Please join us at 9.00 AM on March 25 for "Preserving an Open Society in a Perilous World," a conference in which we will discuss the tension between freedom and security, and the particular challenges of maintaining a balance between the two in the information age. Conference participants will include Judith Miller, Andrew McCarthy, Paul Twomey, Gabe Schoenfeld, former Attorney General Michael Mukasey, and Secretary Michael Chertoff.
