We are excited to announce the upcoming exhibition of Thornton Willis, a friend of The New Criterion, at the Elizabeth Harris Gallery. James Panero recently visited the artist’s studio to preview his work that will appear at the exhibition. James wrote, “Thornton’s abstractions are a blend of geometry and intuition. For his latest series, he pares down his forms and used strong color contrasts to energize the tension between figure and ground.”
In a 2007 profile for Art & Antiques, James also wrote
A new urgency now fills his compositions, a tension between the structures of Cubism and the gestures of Abstract Expressionism. He says he struggles with these paintings. Edgy, bending and sticking out into our space, they are animated by a career in abstraction.
The exhibition will run March 14- April 13.
