\nand cicadas scratch out a dry music.<\/p>\n
The bells in the valley suspend unmoved,
\ntheir tongues hanging out.<\/p>\n
Paving stones underfoot on the terrace
\nblossom salmon-pink, copper-tarnish, verdigris.<\/p>\n
Every color goes with every other color,
\neven the faded football jersey
\nof the man out taking a stroll.<\/p>\n
Children\u2019s voices from a hedged garden levitate
\nand\u2014there!\u2014a white shuttlecock
\nhalf-moons over the arrow cypresses.<\/p>\n
But who\u2019s this
\nout for an airing?
\nA butterfly,
\nheraldic and unheralded,<\/p>\n
as if these two wings
\nand they only
\nhad kept themselves under wraps
\nwhile everywhere under the sun
\nspring edged into summer,<\/p>\n
and now they find their moment to appear\u2014
\nbuttercup yellow and bold as a
