Essential though the work of the Olin Foundation was, there
is another conservative institution celebrating a milestone
this month: we mean National Review, founded by William F.
Buckley Jr. in 1955, fifty years ago this month. Later in
this issue, Jeffrey Hart, a long-time senior editor at NR,
offers some reminiscences about the early years of the
magazine. We would simply like to add our voice to the
chorus of congratulation that has surrounded Mr. Buckley and
his magazine these past weeks. In the very first issue of
National Review, Mr. Buckley famously wrote that one task
of the magazine was “to stand athwart history yelling
Stop!” What a pleasing irony, then, that his inaugural
interdiction has started so many good things. Happy
