Our apologies to Philippe de Montebello—and to our readers—for misstating the terms of Mr. de Montebello’s new duties at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in our Notes & Comments section for February 1998. Basing our Note on a misleading news story in The New York Times of January 15, we mistakenly reported that in naming Mr. de Montebello to the new position of chief executive officer at the museum, the Met’s board of trustees had retired the office of “director.” In fact, Mr. de Montebello retains the title of director while also assuming the duties of the museum’s chief executive officer. We promise not to rely on The New York Times in such matters in the future.
