Giunge a volte, repente,
un’ora che il tuo cuore disumano
ci spaura e dal nostro si divide.
Dalla mia la tua musica sconcorda,
allora, ed è nemico ogni tuo moto.
In me ripiego, vuoto
di forze, la tua voce pare sorda.
M’affisso nel pietrisco
che verso te digrada
fino alla ripa acclive che ti sovrasta,
franosa, gialla, solcata

Suddenly, at times, there comes
a moment when your inhuman heart,
estranged from ours, terrifies.
Then your music clashes with mine,
your every movement is hostile.
I withdraw into myself, drained
of strength, your voice is stifled.
I stare at the stony scree
spilling downhill toward you
to the bluff that slopes above you—
yellow, eroded, rutted
by rain-gouged torrents.
My life is this dry slope—
middle, not end—a road open to converging
runnels, one long, crumbling landslide.
It is this life, again, this flower,
devastation-born,
that dares the sea’s hammering, sways
with the wind’s capricious gusting.
In this patch of earth devoid of growing things,
a crack widens to let a daisy sprout.
In this flower I tremble toward the sea that lashes me;
silence is still an absence in my life.
I look at the earth, which glitters,
air so still it darkens.
And what grows in me
may be the rancor,
O sea, that every son feels for his father.
