More on Sandall

Another reader writes in with a thoughtful response to Roger Sandall’s “Politics of Oxymoron” (summer 2003). Here is a sample:
While I thought Roger Sandall’s article entirely readable as
always, I thought it left certain things unclear, which led to
the Vidya Sagar exchange. In addition to what has been said, I
might point out that neither India prior to British colonization,
nor China prior to the twentieth century can claim to be humane
in the same sense that the West can (with odd explosions of
barbarism such as in the Titus Oates episode or the Gordon Riots)
since about the end of the sixteenth century.
