Eugenio Montale

The fact is life is not explained
by biology
or theology.
Life is very long
even when it’s short
like the butterfly’s—
life is always prodigal
even when the earth produces nothing.
Furious the struggle we put up
to make it useless and impossible.
All that’s left is fishing in the unconscious
the last farce of our dying theater.
I’d sentence those who practice it, or submit,
to hard labor or the gallows. It’s clear the ignorant
are more than sufficient to darken the darkness.
